I found the 'Virgin Suicides' to be so good that it was sickening. I truly did. And yet, I am over Lolita, the whole aesthetic, the whole meaning. I despise what Tiktok and the media have done to these books - making them an accessory to an aesthetic.
I am no toxic book gatekeeper at all. I read bad books that are not helpful at all to my academic prowess, guilty pleasures, and classics. I encourage everyone to read, share what they're reading. But the romanticization of this aesthetic that stems from a "pretty when I cry" mindset is toxic, and not at all healthy.
I understand that human helps with coping with loss, grief, mental illness. But in the same way we should not be romanticizing "Girl, Interrupted", and disrupted behavior, romanticizing it, in my opinion only makes it worse. It means you accept it, when you could be, and should be receiving help. It means pushing others away, and although not all of those who adopt a "cottagecore", "lana" lifestyle is toxic, romanticizing ideas, books, and films seems to be have negating effects instead of positive ones.
